This was a custom job I did for a fellow here in the Victoria area of Vancouver island. I actually tied two of these floats for him. Both of the floats were about 14" in diameter.

I made the netting with 1/8" genuine Stockholm pine tarred cord. The netting itself was made in the likeness of the traditional Japanese style. With the exception of the loop handle, the netting is made with a single piece of cord. The loop handle is made with three lengths of the 1/8" tarred cord that are left-hand (S-laid) cable twisted. The cable ends are left-hand spliced, tucked three times, and finished with a double wall and crown. The center knot of the loop is a two-strand Matthew Walker lanyard knot (*ABOK 776).

To tie these floats, I had the fellow email me the diameters of his floats as well as the diameters of the 'seal button glass globs'. I then pre-tied the netting, which is basically a net bag, and made the loop handles. When the netting was ready, I had the fellow bring the floats to my shop, put them into the net bags and did the finishing work on them. I have also pre-tied netting for people and mailed it to them with instructions on how to do the finishing work themselves.

A 14" float requires one full 50m coil of pine tarred cord to make the netting plus 6m to make the loop handle. Pine tarred cord cost me about $1.20/m. I do not mark the price of the cord up. I only charge the material cost plus my labour. I charge $70.00 labour to tie a float this size. A float this size would therefore cost you about about $142.20 plus taxes to have me tie it. The price would be the same if I was to pre-tie the netting and mail it to you. The only difference would that you would also have to pay shipping and handling for the netting.
